About my nickname

D. Glenn Arthur Jr., The Human Vibrator

My nickname is pretty much what it sounds like: I can make any part of my body vibrate. First I learned to vibrate my tongue, but then I figured that if I could vibrate my hands as well, then I wouldn't get slapped as often when I tried to show off. So I learned to make my hands vibrate. After that, I decided to find out how many parts of my body I could do that trick with, and eventually found that with a bit of thinking and a bit of effort (and being in the right position helps), I could in fact make any part of my body vibrate.

There are several people I've met who can make their hands vibrate -- so far it seems about a third of them learned it independantly, a third from me, and the remaining third figured it out themselves after getting the idea from me. There are a few people I know who can vibrate other body parts, and at least one other who can vibrate his entire body the way I can. But I'm the one with the nickname.

At science fiction conventions one tends to meet lots of people. Names often get forgotten, so people wind up trying to describe the person they've just met, the person they're trying to locate, the person you want to introduce your friend to, etc. After I started showing off my little vibrating trick, I found out that one way a lot of people were describing me was, "the human vibrator". So I started introducing myself that way and demonstrating my skill when meeting people, and sure enough, people who'd heard of me knew who I was, and people later remembered who I was.

When I got back on the net (after an absence of a few years) I added "The Human Vibrator" to my .signature file, in case anyone who'd met me but didn't remember my name should read something I posted. Not surprisingly, a few people did recognize me exactly that way. I also heard from some old friends I'd lost track of, who saw something I posted, wondered whether I was the same Glenn Arthur they knew, and realized that yes I was when they saw that nickname in my .signature. So now it's become sort of a trademark and sort of a nickname.
